A Wedding, No Funeral and a Baby is the tenth episode of the third season of Virgin River. It is the thirtieth episode of the series overall. This was the third season finale.
Synopsis[]
Jack makes a momentous decision on as Mel grapples with how to share surprising news. Doc is plagued with concern. Preacher meets with Paige's friend.
Plot[]
10 days later, Mel, Jack and Doc continue to be by Hope’s side at the hospital. However, she is getting worse as new swelling has developed on her brain. They have to decide whether to increase her steroids or put her in a coma. Due to her heart attack, increase in steroids is not possible and the coma does not guarantee that she will wake up when taken off it. Still, Doc agrees to it and the group hopes for the best.
Mel discovers that she is pregnant but is now unsure of whether or not her IVF procedure in L.A. was successful or if she got pregnant by Jack. This leads to internal debate about when and how to share the pregnancy news with him. She decides to hold off on the news now although the two make dinner plans for the evening.
Doc remains devoted to Hope in the hospital. Lizzie arrives to comfort Doc, having brought him music to help him relax. He thanks her for being so thoughtful and the two continue to listen together.
Preacher arrives at the bar and briefly talks to the new server, Hannah. He goes to the office and asks Jack about Hope and Vernon and tells him that he will pray for them. Jack seeks an update on the partnership offer from Preacher, who decides to join. On the other hand, Jack tells Preacher of his plans to propose to Mel after seeing Doc’s heartbreak over the idea of losing Hope. However, he has doubts following his failed marriage. Preacher reminds him that a lot has changed since then and pushes him to pursue what makes him happy.
Mel and Brie have lunch, and Brie reveals plans to leave town for a fresh start. Mel reminds her that running away won’t automatically solve her problems until she chooses to, having learnt from experience. Brie reveals her true reason for coming to Virgin River and what it is that she is hiding from but asks her to not tell Jack. She tells Mel about her ex boyfriend, who was charming at first, and reveals that he raped her, which lead to her conceiving the baby that she miscarried. Mel comforts her as she continues to bawl.
Preacher meets with Paige's friend who reveals that she plans to turn herself in but wishes to see Christopher. Preacher is adamant that doing that will not be in Christopher’s best interest. Sally agrees but states that Paige won’t listen to her. He asks the woman to take him to Paige, who he hopes that he will be able to convince, and the two leave together. Charmaine informs Jack of her sudden marriage to Todd. Jack congratulates her and she confronts him on hiring an attorney to fight for custody over the twins. He is adamant that he just wants to be a part of his children’s lives. Charmaine clarifies Todd's desire to exclude Jack from the twins' lives. He is shocked, considering that they are his kids and Charmaine says that she isn’t going to risk her marriage over trying to defend Jack. He reminds her that they are the twin’s parents. At the moment, Todd will be representing Charmaine and she tells Jack to discuss any custody issues with him. He asks her if she really plans to keep him away from his children and she accuses him of trying to guilt her.
Preacher and Sally get drinks and drive to the secret location where Paige is.
Calvin, now free, pressures Brady to continue running drugs for Emerald Lumber. Brady refuses and expresses his lack of interest. Calvin threatens him, saying that his suppliers need money and if they don’t get it, they will come after him. He mocks Brady, saying that he heard about his alibi falling apart. Brady is adamant that he has nothing to do with it and Calvin simply responds that he has nothing to worry about.
Ricky apologises to Lizzie for withholding information from her. He explains that he didn’t tell her because they want different things. Lizzie replies that while she would’ve been upset at first, eventually she would’ve accepted his decision. She tells him that she loved him but suggests they move on. Parker arrives and the two head off together.
Brie comes to see Brady and asks him if he wants to hang out. He agrees and the two go inside together.
Preacher and Sally arrive at the location and she points to where the secluded house is. As Preacher walks down, he begins to feel lightheaded and collapses. Sally steals his phone and gets away, abandoning him.
Brady and Brie decide to watch a movie together. He tries to comfort her and she reveals her plans to leave Virgin River. He repeats that his feelings for her are true and that she consumes him. She replies that things between them can’t work because of everything that has happened with Jack. He attempts to convince Brie to stay and after some more persuasion, she relents.
Mel and Jack visit Tara, who discloses the existence of an anonymous trust for her and Chloe. As she briefly leaves the room, Jack immediately guesses that the benefactor is Mel, who doesn’t want Tara to feel indebted to her. She brings a painting that her father made of the river and gifts it to Mel, saying it was Lilly’s wish.
Brie and Brady start to watch the movie but are interrupted by Mike and the sheriff’s office, who arrive with a search warrant. Brie reads it and tells him that he doesn’t have a choice. Brady reluctantly obliges and Mike advises Brie to leave.
Mel and Jack get back to the cabin and Mel goes to sleep, exhausted. Jack suggests that they watch the sunrise together and she agrees. He kisses her goodnight and walks away, whilst looking at the ring.
Lizzie tells Parker that she won’t be returning to LA and he reveals that he no longer plans to open a club and will not be going back either. He attempts to get back together with her and asks her to travel cross country with him. He apologises for his infidelity and confesses his love for her.
A young man walks up to the B&B and checks in. Jo Ellen checks him in, observing that he is from Seattle, and inquires about his reason for visiting. He reveals that he is looking for his grandfather, Vernon Mullins, which shocks the woman.
Muriel visits an exhausted Doc at the hospital. She keeps him company and shows him a photo blanket that she and the ladies made for Hope. He thanks her but at that moment, is approached by Hope’s doctor, who reveals that she has developed a fever. As she leaves, Vernon breaks down, blaming himself for causing her to rush to Lilly’s funeral. Muriel comforts him and Vernon feels hopeless.
Connie and Christopher get home but Preacehr is not there. They joke about eating a whole pizza together. Unbeknownst to them, Vince is sitting in the next room, having tracked Christopher down. He gets up and walks toward them, planning to snatch Christopher.
The search team is about to conclude with no evidence until a gun is found in Brady’s Jeep, matching the one that Jack was shot with. Brady is arrested on suspicion of Jack's attempted murder and Brie refuses to believe him when he is adamant that he is just being framed.
As Mel and Jack watch the sunrise, he reflects on their love story. He gets down on one knee and prepares to propose but Mel reveals her pregnancy. Jack's is overjoyed and Mel proceeds to admit uncertainty about the father.
