Ava Anderson is a recurring character in Virgin River first introduced in Season 5. She is one of Lilly Anderson’s daughters and lives in Portland but returns to town after the death of her mother. Ava is the older sister of Tara and Chloe and has two other siblings.
History[]
Ava is the oldest daughter of Buck and Lilly Anderson. She is one of five children, all of whom grew up on the Anderson farm in Virgin River. At some point in her teenage years, Ava came out to her parents, both of whom were very supportive. She later moved to Portland, Oregon, where she pursued a career as a musician. She mentions having a crazy ex girlfriend who stole her cat. Her father Buck dies unexpectedly and she loses her mother Lilly less than a year later to pancreatic cancer.
Visit to Virgin River[]
After the death of her mother, Ava comes to town to visit her sisters and help Tara take care of Chloe. She meets Mel and the two quickly become friends, both having experienced struggles with infertility.
She continues to remain in town even after Tara leaves, remaining after the wildfire burnt down their childhood home.
Mel speaks to Ava at the bar. As they start talking though, Ava drops her wine glass on the floor. Mel picks her up from the hospital and Ava is adamant she doesn’t want a follow-up either, and given it’s a long way back to town, the pair decide to stop for lunch en-route. There, Ava points out that a few years back she had laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis. She always knew it could recur and now it’s back. Her choice is to get a hysterectomy and that’s a tough choice to make.
During wildlife fire Mel shows up at Ava’s house and finds it is surrounded by smoke. She hears Lilly’s baby, Chloe, crying and she rushes in to save her. Mel saves Chloe from the fire and struggling to wake up Ava, who’s passed out inside. Jack shows up at Lilly’s house and helps Mel save Ava. They take Chloe and Ava to the clinic, and immediately check on Chloe’s lungs due to smoke inhalation.
Ava reveals to Hope that her sister, Tara, has received a great job offer in San Francisco and will be taking the job and Chloe with her. Because she lives in Portland, Ava intends to sell her farmland before returning to her own home. Developers called with interest in the land, but Hope suggests she hold off from accepting so she can find someone else to buy Lilly’s land.
Ava decides to stick around in town until she finds the right buyer for the farm, which pleases Mel knowing she’ll have another friend staying for longer.
As for Mel, she takes Jack up to Ava’s farm and decides that this is the sign they’ve been looking for.
