Nate Brenner is Joey Barnes's husband.

In season 4, Joey arrives and surprises Mel that she is engaged and she’s getting married to Nate the next day at Clear River and they’ve only been together for a month. Mel is worried that Joey isn’t thinking clearly but Jack tries to convince her not to get involved.
Mel is worried that her sister is rushing everything and believes she should take it easy. Mel points out that Joey just doesn’t want to be alone, which obviously doesn’t go down too well with her sister. Mel continues to vent later on, speaking to Hope about how she’s worried about Joey’s recklessness.
Later, Nate has cancelled the wedding because of Mel's involvement.
Nate has agreed to do breakfast with Mel but Joey is pretty livid about the whole situation. Mel feels guilty and changes the bedding, which is her way of dealing with stress.
In the morning, Mel meets with Nate and profusely apologizes for getting involved. Nate though points out that Mel opened his eyes and has his doubts over whether Joey actually wanted to get married or was just going along with this because it’s what he wanted. After a brief chat, Mel meets Joey who admits that he’s spoken to Nate and they’ve both agreed to get married after all.
Nate is seen again in season 5 spending Christmas with Joey, Jack and Mel.
