Take My Breath Away is the fourth episode of the third season of Virgin River. It is the twenty-fourth episode of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Doc and Mel help Christopher and Preacher with a medical emergency. After an angry confrontation, Jack focuses his energy on a romantic gesture.
Plot[]
Jack sleeps but wakes up when he realises that Mel is not next to him. He gets up and checks the cabin but she is nowhere to be found. Jack goes outside with a flashlight and finds Mel sleeping in her car.
The two talk in the morning and Mel reveals that Jack’s snoring kept her awake. She didn’t want to wake him as he was tired and has been through a lot. Jack firmly states that he will check into the B&B as he sees now that he is invading Mel’s space. Mel continuously tries to convince him to stay and though initially hesitant, he eventually agrees. The two kiss on the couch.
At the clinic, Hope and Vernon FaceTime. She reveals that despite her aunt being stubborn, they were able to evacuate. However, she must stay in South Carolina for a while longer to help her readjust following the hurricane. Vernon agrees as long as she is not putting herself in danger. Hope asks that that Vernon send out 3,982 copies of the Virgin River Quarterly, which will inform the town citizens of the upcoming Lumberjack Games. Vernon jokes that he is not equipped to run the event for her and the two laugh and talk but he starts to lose connection of Hope.
At the bar, Jack receives a phone call from Mike, who tells him that he will be questioning Jimmy. Jack asks to talk to Jimmy to confirm that it is him but since it is against protocol, Mike refuses. He promises to call after the interview and Jack seemingly complies. However, he calls Preacher and asks him to cover in the afternoon, presumably so that he can go to the police station.
As Mel arrives at the clinic, she gets a phone call from Joey, who vents about her upcoming divorce. She cries that she will be alone forever whilst Bill already has a new girlfriend, who is younger and fitter than her and they have gone on vacation together. Mel tells her to focus on herself. Joey is overwhelmed at the idea of her meeting the kids and being alone at the hearing but Mel promises to come to LA to support her. Inside, she hears a message on Doc’s answering machine from Julia, who has arranged another interview.
At the bar, Connie shows up with Lizzie, who is annoyed at her constant control over her. The other ladies warn her that being more strict won’t get her anywhere, but Connie is adamant that she knows what she is doing. Vernon approaches the table and everyone talks of the relief they feel now that Hope has been reached. Muriel offers the group’s help with mailing the editions of the paper.
Lizzie goes to see Ricky in the kitchen. The two briefly talk about her relationship with Carter before agreeing to hang out later. They embrace each other, which is witnessed by Connie. Preacher and Jack talk about their common struggle of raising children. Preacher receives a text from Jamie and Jack questions what happened between the two, hinting that they have feelings for each other. Preacher explains that it is not like that and tells Jack about the offer she got him in San Francisco and how he almost took it out but backed out because of Jack and Christopher. Jack is surprised that Preacher considered leaving but the latter remarks that after Jack refused the offer, he wanted to keep his options open. He tells him it’s fine before getting a call from the summer camp to come and pick up Christopher. They agree to finish the conversation later.
At Emerald Lumber, there has been an infestation in the trees and they are no longer salvageable. Since Calvin didn’t insure the company or pay for inspections, it is not surprising. Brady is annoyed that he is now responsible for this mess. Jeb suggests selling the company but Brady refuses, saying he will figure something out.
At the house, Vernon and Muriel prepare the papers whilst talking. Vernon gets a paper cut and Muriel treats him as the two continue to joke. Lilly arrives to help but it is clear that she suspects Muriel is up to something with Vernon. He leaves to return to the clinic.
At the bar, Jack makes food for Brie and the two talk. He asks her about her job hunting but she admits that she isn’t looking. She confesses that she isn’t sure if law is for her which stuns Jack, considering Brie always wanted to be a lawyer. Brie says that she didn’t know what she was in for. Jack says that he will support her and she thanks him but says she has to figure it out by herself. Jack confides that he believes Todd and Charmaine will keep him from the twins. Brie agrees to help by contacting a friend of hers in Eureka who is a family lawyer. He also tells her about the situation with Mel, and Brie jokes that she is not surprised, having heard his snoring, although she also tells him that he is overthinking it too much.
Preacher picks up Christopher, assuming that he is trying to get out of camp by feigning sickness. Christopher continues to express that he feels sick and Preacher agrees to take him to see Doc, expecting him to confess, but he does not.
Vernon returns to the clinic to find Tara there and the two talk. She tells him that she is concerned about her mother, who has been more tired recently. They both agree to try and convince her to come in for a checkup. Tara thanks him for his help before leaving. Mel questions Doc about the message on the machine but he dismisses her, saying it is private and it doesn’t matter. Christopher and Preacher arrive and Doc goes to examine him while Mel talks to Preacher, who still believes that he is just bluffing. All of a sudden, Doc frantically calls Mel as Christopher is hypoxic. They help him breathe and Doc clears his airways. Preacher is shocked at what is happening.
Meanwhile, Mike is at the station with Jimmy and is about to question him. He leaves him unsupervised briefly, during which Jack arrives. He questions Jimmy of shooting him but the latter argues that Jack would be dead already and he would’ve been charged with the crime. Jimmy talks about his unemployment which Jack brushes off, stating that he will probably find work in prison. As Jack walks away, Jimmy remarks that Calvin is aware of Jack’s involvement in the raid and has plans to kill him. Once he does so, Jimmy agrees to take care of Mel, causing Jack to physically attack him before Mike intervenes and asks him to leave. Jack is frustrated that the person who tried to kill him is still roaming free.
Muriel and Lilly have gotten through a significant amount of the papers but there is still a lot more to do. Lilly tells Muriel that she has to go home soon to feed Chloe and the latter tells her that she will get the rest done. Lilly is surprised as it is a big commitment and will take Muriel a long time but she is happy to do it since it is for a good cause. Lilly finally speaks up and warns Muriel that attempting to get Vernon will only result in her getting hurt. Muriel confesses that she doesn’t really have many friends and that Doc really is a good one. Lilly accepts this.
Jack receives a call from Mel, who asks him when he is coming home. He asks her if she is sure that she wants him to stay at the cabin, and Mel confirms that she is, so Jack agrees. She talks to Preacher, who feels guilty for not believing Christopher. Doc gives an update that he has stabilised Christopher and reveals that he mentioned being dunked by some older kids while swimming. This only deepens Preacher’s guilt but Doc and Mel reassure him that he is doing his best and couldn’t have known. Mel asks Doc to be honest about his new hire. He is vague and only says that he isn’t looking to replace Mel but doesn’t tell her the true reasoning behind his search.
Brie and Brady meet at a bar. She is running late and Brady had assumed that she wouldn’t come, but she says that she had to help Jack with something. Brady tries to buy her a drink but she is guarded, asserting her independence. She claims that things are less confusing when things are done her way. He complies, which surprises her as she expected some pushback. He tells her that he doesn’t argue over small things. Brie questions what he does when it’s about things that matter, and he replies that while he doesn’t start anything, he always finishes it. Brie likes the sound of it and the two drink to not letting people walk all over them.
Lizzie shows up at Ricky’s house with a suitcase. Lydie walks in and asks if she is going somewhere. She asks if she can stay with them for a while as Connie and her have had an argument. Ricky and Lydie are both surprised.
Mel returns home to Jack preparing a surprise for her in the bathroom. She asks if she should start preparing dinner but he tells her no and opens the door, revealing a room full of candles and flowers to help her relax. She thanks him and they embrace. Mel asks Jack to join her but declines, saying he has some more things to prepare. He receives a call from Mike, who informs him that they had to let Jimmy go because he had an alibi. Jack immediately assumes that he paid someone off but Mike replies that it was a sheriff reporting him in the drunk tank the night that Jack got shot and so he highly doubts it. He agrees to continue looking.
Vernon talks to Hope about the treatment options for his condition. Many of them have severe side effects like stroke and infection which scares Hope, and she forbids Vernon from proceeding. Hope informs him that she is coming home but Vernon reminds her that she is needed in South Carolina. He only asks her that they keep the diagnosis between them and she agrees.
Mel finishes her bath and goes outside to find that Jack has replicated the tree swing from her childhood and Lilly’s farm. She is shocked that he remembered that and Jack pledges his love for her once again. He then shows her his final surprise which is the lake next to the cabin lined with candles and tea lights, with which Brie helped him with. They get in a small boat and row it across the lake while embracing.
At the bar in Clear River, Brie and Brady play darts. She is agitated as it is not her type of game compared to pool. Brady tries to teach her but she claims that he is just showing off. A song that Brie loves starts playing and two dance sensually. As the song finishes, a woman that Brie knew in Sacramento approaches her and apologises for not having believed her. However, before it can be revealed what she is talking about, Brie runs out. Brady follows her and calls her name but she leaves anyways as he watches in disappointment.
Mel and Jack are laying in bed. Mel is clearly deep in her thoughts. Jack notices this and questions her. Since they agreed to be honest with each other, Mel asks him how he would feel if she had a baby.
